James 1:23-25
A hearer of the
word looks intently at his natural face in the mirror, trying to get the
perfect spiritual look, fixing this and adjusting that all according to what
image he wants to reproduce. A doer of
the word looks into the perfect law, and sees the image of God. Looking into a mirror and looking intently at
my own natural face, my fleshly face, I can be blinded to God’s image and see
the image of the world we live in. I
look at the things that make up worldly success; money, ambition, legalism,
relevant theology, need for title and status.
It’s all about me and deserving my place and reward form God.
When I look into
the perfect law of God and do those things I am responding to things looking
through God’s eyes. I am acting at
producing His image, not mine. It is all
about Him and not me.
Spiritual self
absorption in the quest for God is just as bad, if not worse than worldly self
absorption. It still holds Self at the
center. Becoming a better Self is not
the goal of a Christian. Being and
reflecting the image of God to the world is what I am to be and do. It’s all about Him and His glory, to which
all praise and worship goes.
